After completing my SMC ll, in TIGS my friends and I were sent to Tengku Mariam Girls' School to do our standard six. The school were quite a distance from my house in Jalan Dagang, but I still walk to school. The HM then was Mrs.Raja. I could still remember the school uniform that we ware. Red pinafore and orange blouse. (Warna keling - without prejudice)
The class teacher was late Miss Menon. The fiercest teacher I ever met. Whenever we failed her test or didnt complete our homework or too noisy, she made us sit under the table. She treated us like little mice. I was rather weak in mathematic then. But to pass the entrance exam to form one (then they called it the Federal Exam.) you need a pass in mathematics. My late father was worried. Dressed in his postman uniform he popped in the class while Miss Menon was teaching. I didn't quite know what my father said to her, but the moment my father left Miss Menon called me. "Alimah! who ask your father to come to school?" She gave me a huge pinch on my cheek. I couldn't held my tears. "Next time, tell your father not to come to school and blah .... blah ...... blah". I couldn't forgive her for that.
Then come the fruit seasson. My friends brought "jambu air", mangoes and "buah kuini" to school. MissMenon couldn't stand the smell of "buah kuini". What did she do then? She went to every table and collected every single fruit and throwed them in the dustbin just outside the classroom. Then she went on teaching as though nothing had happened. Then came the PWD lorry to collect the garbages. All of a sudden my friends and I rushed out to collect back the fruits that she had thrown out. I could hear Miss Menon shouting "You greedy girls" on top of her voice and angrily she marched out of the class. That day we feasted ourselves with "jambu air" mangoes and "buah kuini".During recess a friend brought suger mix with salt and some soy-sauce to eat with the fruits.
Those innocent days !!!
